Sometimes it's hard to afford the "unnecessary" furniture pieces like a nice bed frame and headboard, but they really do serve to make a house feel like home. So, I designed this headboard to be low cost and simple. It can be added to a simple metal bed frame right away and later upgraded to a nicer frame if desired. These plans are for a queen sized bed, but can be adjusted in width to fit a twin, full, or king sized beds. The cost of wood for this headboard is around 55.00 for the queen size.

Materials:

- (3) 2x4x8

- (3) 1x2x8

- (1) 1/2" 4x8 Plywood

- 2" Pockethole Screws

- 2 1/2" Pockethole Screws

- 1" Brad Nails

- Wood Glue

- Sand Paper

- Paint or Stain and Finish

Tools:

- Tape Measure

- Pencil

- Square

- Circular Saw or Table Saw

- Rip Cut Guide

- Miter Saw (optional)

- Pockethole Jig

- Drill

- Brad Nailer

- Safety Equipment

Step one: create the basic 2x4 frame using 1 1/2" pocket holes and 2 1/2" pocket hole screws with wood glue. Ensure your frame is square.

Step two: measure the inside of your frame and cut the 1/2" plywood to fit. Attach the plywood to the frame using 1/2" pocket holes and 2" pocket hole screws with wood glue. The plywood should be flush to the back of the frame so that there is a 1" inset on the front side.

The next step is to cut the 1x2 pieces to create a grid on the front. Of course you can design your grid anyway you like, it just dresses up the headboard so be creative! Attach the 1x2s with wood glue and 1" brad nails.

The last step is to finish with paint or stain. Attach the headboard to your bed frame with the appropriate sized screws and you're done!
